Arsene Wenger left fuming by Arsenal's defensive display against Bayern Munich
Arsene Wenger was left berating an "extremely poor" defensive display as Bayern Munich thrashed his Arsenal side to leave their Champions League hopes dangling by a thread.
Having beaten Bayern at the Emirates Stadium a fortnight ago, the Gunners brought a decent record to Germany only to be blown away by one of Europe's super-powers.
Robert Lewandowski needed 10 minutes to head the hosts in front before a brace for Thomas Muller and goals from David Alaba and substitute Arjen Robben wrapped up a convincing 5-1 win for Bayern.
Arsenal had a potential Mesut Ozil equaliser correctly ruled out for offside as Olivier Giroud pulled one back for the Premier League side but by that time they were four goals behind having been torn apart by a rampant Munich frontline.
The result means Arsenal have lost three of their four Group F fixtures and sit bottom of the group - with wins in their remaining two matches not enough to guarantee progression.
Wenger's cause was not helped here as both Hector Bellerin and Laurent Koscielny were ruled out with injuries - and the two players drafted into the Gunners defence were culpable.
Gabriel partnered Per Mertesacker at the heart of the defence but played Lewandowski onside for the opener while Mathieu Debuchy completely missed a Philipp Lahm cross that led to Muller doubling the lead.
And Wenger was in no mood to sugar-coat his side's deficiencies at the back as he saw Arsenal suffer their heaviest Champions League defeat in their history.
"I believe first you have to give credit to Bayern for their quality and on top of that we made things quite easy for them with our defensive performance," he said.
"We were extremely poor defensively and were not at the races. The funny thing was that when we went forward every time we looked like we could create chances but with a defensive performance like that you are going nowhere."
Wenger stopped short of labelling the performance the worst defensive display of his lengthening tenure and admits progression into the knockout rounds is looking unlikely.
"My memory is not good enough to tell you in 19 years if it is not the worst performance," he said.
"It will certainly not remain in my memory for anything positive.
"There is still a chance to qualify, Olympiacos have to lose here, we have to beat Zagreb and then beat Olympiacos in Olympiacos, there is a small chance but it is a real one.
"We have to realise with the kind of performance we have today that our chance is at a minimum."
A north London derby at home to rivals Tottenham on Sunday could prove the perfect tonic for Wenger and his players as they look to keep up the pace at the top of the Premier League.
The Frenchman is focused now on that fixture, although he did admit his players may suffer psychologically after this drubbing.
"No matter how many we have, we have to give it all for a chance to qualify," he added.
"Anyway we now focus on the championship on Sunday and turn up with a different performance, we are in a strong position in the league because if we play like we did today we are going nowhere.
"Bellerin I don't think will be available for Sunday and Koscielny has a small chance. From tonight we have no more injuries, apart from in their heads we have no more injuries."
Thanks to a late Olympiacos winner against Dynamo Zagreb, Arsenal now need the Greek side to lose in Munich in a fortnight for them to stand any chance of getting out of the group.
A draw here would put both Munich and Olympiacos through, but Pep Guardiola insists his Bayern side will be looking for the win to sew up top spot.
"You make this question to a coach and a club then you have to know it is impossible to not try and win the game," he said when asked if he could assure Arsenal his side will not settle for a draw.
"Arsenal fans need to be calm. The players are going to go and try to win against Olympiacos, we might not be able to do that but not because we weren't fighting but we want to be first in the group."
Dozens Killed in Cargo Plane Crash in South Sudan Along Nile
NAIROBI, Kenya — A cargo plane also carrying soldiers and civilians crashed Wednesday along the banks of the Nile minutes after taking off from South Sudan’s capital, Juba, killing most of those on board, according to United Nations and government officials.
There were conflicting reports on Wednesday on the number of fatalities. A spokesman for the Red Cross in South Sudan said the organization had pulled 36 bodies from the wreckage, including those of children.
“Some were underneath, some were outside, scattered,” said the spokesman, Maju Hillary. “The whole area was littered with parts of human beings.”
He added that there could be more bodies buried under the debris.
South Sudan’s military spokesman, Col. Philip Aguer, said the aircraft’s pilot reported only 12 passengers on board upon takeoff. A presidential spokesman, Ateny Wek Ateny, told Reuters that the plane was carrying 18 people, including six foreign crew members, and that all but three had died in the crash.
At least one adult and a toddler reportedly survived the crash, officials said.

Ben Carson Leads Donald Trump in New NBC Poll
For the second time in a week, Ben Carson took the lead in a national poll, drawing 29 percent support in an NBC/Wall Street Journal survey released on Monday evening and eclipsing Donald J. Trump, who had 23 percent.
It is the highest any Republican candidate has reached in that survey and bolsters a New York Times poll last week that showed Mr. Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, passing Mr. Trump, who had led state and national polls for months.
Mr. Carson “has broad support but we don’t know yet the depth and commitment of that support,” Fred Yang, one of two pollsters who conducted the survey, said in a statement
The poll found that Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, who is coming off a strong debate performance last week, was at 11 percent. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas had 10 percent and Jeb Bush 8 percent.
The poll also held good news for Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey, whose recent polling put him in danger of not making the cut for the main stage at the next debate on Nov. 10 in Milwaukee. Mr. Christie’s 3 percent support in the latest poll appeared to give him an average of 2.5 percent in the four most recent national surveys, which meets the debate’s stated requirement for main stage participation.
An analysis last week by another pollster, Patrick Murray of Monmouth University, suggested that Mr. Christie could become the first candidate to be demoted from the main debate stage because he was pulling just 1 percent in some surveys. On Monday Mr. Murray said Mr. Christie had moved up to “the magic 2.5” percent average.
Other candidates near the cutoff also cleared the bar: Mike Huckabee, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky and Gov. John R. Kasich of Ohio.

DONT GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMs YET your success could just be next door
Today, your life is changing for the better. You will experience progress in every area of your life.
It was Alexander the Great who said; ‘Nothing is impossible for a man who is willing to try’. So, I will like ask you, are you willing to try again and again until you get the desired result in that business or career that had failed before?
You can only succeed in any venture if you don’t give up. Remember that great inventor, Thomas Edison who invented the light bulb, among other inventions failed over 1,000 times. He never gave up until he became successful. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th American President also failed severally at polls before he finally won the presidency in 1860.
What if Lincoln had given up after he lost the legislative, congress, senatorial and vice presidential elections, would he have become one of the greatest American presidents? No!
Do not give up on your dreams because it is still possible for your dreams to become a reality. Rise up! Start all over again. You will come through this time.
